Welcome to the 13th issue of Nuanced Narratives.
It’s been a while! July was busy and I didn't get around to doing interviews or publishing an issue, but lots of new updates and insights to share this month.
First off, the membership is now live. You can sign up as a free member to get access to in-depth case studies and events, or as a full member for $6 per month for full access.
The talent directory will be online next week. Portfolio archiving with WebRecorder and the effective authoring playbook will both be available before the end of the year.
Most importantly the next member event will take place on the 19th of September! Hosted by Zhutian Chen to discuss the impact of AI in dataviz.
This month's award goes to Les Décodeurs from Le Monde, for their stunning story explaining the science of climate change.
A special mention to Hankookilbo for their work on this 3D scrollytelling article.
Two very exciting interviews lined up for next month! I'll be speaking to artists from the National Film Board of Canada's interactive studio and Domestic Data Streamers. I've been inspired by their work for the past decade and am particularly grateful for these sessions.
Both interviews will include separate in-depth case studies for members.
I've also begun researching how to adapt our visual stories to be consumed in XR with Apple Vision Pro, happy to discuss these opinions and the topic at large, reach out anytime. Short excerpt:
I'd venture that traditional "scrollytelling" might be replaced by a more intuitive left and right gesture. Could this reinforce the use of cinematic scene-by-scene techniques, fading in and out of scenes? Or comic-style boxes that expand on gaze intent? I’d also expect behaviours on visual stories to transition from mostly passive observation to more dynamic exploration.
Latest curations from my internet garden.

This issue is sponsored by the Information+ Conference! Taking place in Edinburgh from the 22nd to the 24th of November, it's a great place (and time) to mingle and meet experts from the community and discuss new trends.
Hope to see you there!
